What is a Water Distiller unit?

In simple words, a water distiller is a unit which provides you with distilled water. Distilled water, is water which undergoes many steps of purification. The method adopted by a water distiller for purification is known as distillation process.

The main process involved here is boiling water, then condense the steam. This condensed steam is then stored in a clean container. This water can be called as a distilled water, and they are used for many different purposes. What is a Water Distiller

When you are working in chemical labs or industries, you may require the need to have distilled water. People mostly prefer cheaper alternatives like the deionized water, which can be used in place of distilled water. But if there is need of high purity level, then distilled water must be used.

And in some rare cases, double distillation is preferred where some exception level of purity is required. There are many uses of this distilled water, and even to top off lead acid batteries distilled water is more preferred.

The other use of the distilled water was seen in jet planes; distilled water was used to increase the air density. This was mainly needed during the takeoff time.

Talking about drinking distilled water, you will find bottled distilled water in supermarkets. Also if you are living in a region where the tap water is not suitable fo drinking. You must boil water or use any chemical treatment for making it drinkable.

You may find fluoride ions in water. If you are using conventional filter system here in such cases, then there are higher chances that fluoride ions are not removed. In such scenario, you can use the distillation method. Distillation can remove almost all kinds of water contaminants.

We will now understand the process of water distillation in the next heading.

Process of Water Distillation Explained

We will explain you the complete steps performed in a simple water distillation unit. This method is adopted for separating liquid from other liquid mixtures. And it mainly works where the liquids in operation are of varying boiling points.process of water distiller

The distillation process is mainly used to separate ethanol from water. We will check out the distillation for this process in this section. We can divide the complete process into three steps, and they are as follows:

Step 1- Heat the water and ethanol solution in the first step. Ethanol has got a lower boiling point here, so it will start evaporating first.

Step 2- Then the ethanol vapor is cooled, and condensed in the condenser to form a pure liquid. When all the ethanol contents are evaporated from the solution, only water is left in it.

Step 3- In some time, water starts evaporating. And then it cools down and undergoes condensation.

This is the method adopted by a simple distillation unit. In this way, we can easily separate two liquids with different boiling points using the distillation method.

The liquids in action for any distillation process should have atleast 50 degrees difference in their boiling points. When the liquid is heated in the distillation flask, you will find the purest form of the compound that is the vapor form.

You will find distillation process used in many ways, and we will list some of them here. Some of the types include batch distillation, continuous, general, simple, fractional, vacuum, zone, etc. The main parameter which plays a major role in the process of distillation is Temperature.

Therefore, it remains the responsibility of the supervisor to note down all the temperature readings. And also temperature readings are taken in account in regular time intervals. If there is any slight change with the temperature reading, then the complete process of distillation may go wrong.

How does a Water Distiller Works?

When we are dealing with the industrial chemistry, distillation is one of the basic operation here. Here the distillation is used mainly for physical separation. And not as a chemical reaction. If the water distiller is well maintained, then it could remove almost 95% of the water contaminants.

Compounds like sodium, nitrate, sulfate and other arsenic like elements are removed from the water. This process also removes elements like calcium and magnesium from water. And one point to note here is that distillation is performed for the small amount of water only. When you have got large amounts of water, then using a Reverse Osmosis method is more preferable.

Distillers work on the principle of evaporation and condensation. One electric heating element is used for heating water in a stainless steel tank. The steam created here leaves the tank and then enters the cooling coil. In this cooling coil, water undergoes the condensation process. Thus providing us with the distilled water.

Some of the systems use air for cooling process, while others use incoming water for the cooling process. When complete water is evaporated from steel tank, the switch for the heating element shuts off here. You will find the concentrated solution of the minerals left behind in the tank. This is drained off in the next step.

After this, the refilling of the tank is done manually, and some units have got automatic working here. Normally manual refill is done here, and they are provided with the usual 120 volts power.

You already know that the compound with the lowest boiling point will start evaporating first. And there we will find this compound starts to decrease in quantity from the tank. The complete process will be repeated till complete compound is distilled out from the vessel.

So this is the main operation in a normal water distillation system.

How to Choose the Best Water Distiller System?

Here we will list out some of the key points which must be noted while buying one Water Distiller System. These points will assist you choosing the Best Water Distiller unit. And they are as follows:

  1. The main point to consider is to choose a convenient system. You have to accept the fact that most of the kitchens do not have a large amount of space. So it is better to go for a convenient unit, which can perform the operation and also help you out with the needed space.
  2. Look out for a 4 liters jug which comes with the distiller unit. This jug is used for collecting the water which comes out after the condensation process. Most of the distiller can produce 4 liters of water in around 3-4 hours. So you could know the efficiency of the unit you are using.
  3. Make sure that you are choosing for a unit with a stylish look. And the tank has got a stainless steel finish with it. This is because we want our readers to opt for a quality product for the price being paid.
  4. If you have got a budget, then opt for the best product in that price category. Along with this, take a note of the points like a compact, outer appearance, and affordability.
  5. There is a timer of the cycle in a distiller, and they mainly depend on the size of the unit. We will suggest you guys that if you are a traveler, then you could prefer small distillers for you.
  6. Look out for the cash back guarantees for the unit. And the minimum days limit here should be 30 days, even if the unit is a used one.
  7. Check for the safety certifications and other approvals for the distiller.
  8. It must have a one year warranty on the complete product.
  9. The best distiller systems have got the automatic shut-off feature with it. This feature is for the safety purpose, so it is recommended to use a system which includes it.
  10. Opt for a system which is offered by a reputed firm. At least the firm must have a record of past 5 to 10 years minimum.

So, there you go, these are the various considerations before purchasing the Best Water Distiller unit. Read the points carefully, and make the Top Choice!

How to Build a Salt Water Distiller | DIY Survival Guide

January 25, 2019 By Water Gadget

Ever imagined being stranded on an island for days? Would you be able to survive? How would you get yourself pure drinking water when all you could see would be salt water of the ocean(No, drinking your own pee is not a solution, Peter!).

If you think that’s not going to happen anytime soon, think about that Hawaii vacation you’ve been planning for the past few months! (well, I know Hawaii isn’t deserted; however, you can never deny the possibility of a zombie apocalypse, duh)  The point is, anything can happen. So be prepared!

Bare with me and learn this life-saving trick of building a salt water distiller.

How to Build a Salt Water Distiller

How to Build a Salt Water Distiller

In order to make drinking water out of salt water, the only thing you need to do is separate out water and salt from each other. The question is how you are going to do it! Here is a clue, you can either let the water stay and somehow remove the salt or do the opposite.

Things You’ll Need

  • Two Glass Bottles
  • Two shallow utensils (Preferably larger than the bottles)
  • A small piece of cloth or rubber
  • A heat source
  • Sand

Step-1: Set up the Utensils

Step-1: Set up the Utensils

First of all, take whatever utensils you have and set them on a platform. Here, we will be using metal trays for convenience. However, you can make use of any metal utensil you can find. Another thing you may have noticed is that we have cut side ends of both the tray just so that the bottlenecks can easily peek out.

Make sure to level the utensils at the same height. Here, the tray which is going to be at the receiving end can be set up on anything, perhaps, a stone too. However, the tray which will be containing salt water bottle should be set on a fire or stove.

Step-2: Pour Some Sand

Step-2: Pour Some Sand

Now that you have set the bottles on a safe platform, you need to pour some sand inside those trays. Do not fully fill the trays with sand. Instead, keep them a little empty near the top edges. Sand is a great heat conductor. It will help to uniformly heat up the salt water bottle and the other one will play the role of cooling the vapour down.

Step-3: Seal the Bottle Mouths

Step-3: Seal the Bottle Mouths

Once you have set up the trays with sand in it, all you need to do is put the bottles inside those. Fill one of the bottles with salt water, keep the water level just a little less than half of the bottle. Put this bottle inside the utensil that you set on the fire. Take another bottle and lie it horizontally in the other tray.

Now, you need to put both the bottle mouths together and seal them away. For this, you can simply use a piece of cloth and wrap it up tightly around the mouth of both the bottles. Make sure not to keep the cloth too long or it may catch fire. And if you happen to have a piece of a rubber tube around you, that will be even better to seal the bottles.

Step-4: Wet the Receiving End

Step-4: Wet the Receiving End

As you have set up the bottles in the trays filled with water. The next step will be preparing the receiving end.

Understand that once you heat up the salt water bottle, it will turn into vapour at some point and will travel in the empty space in both the bottles.

In order to capture this purified water vapour at the receiving end, it needs to be cold enough to transform the vapour into liquid water again. This phenomenon is known as condensation. For the process of condensation, we will be wetting the sand at the receiving end with some cold water.

Step-5: Turn up the Heat!

Step-5: Turn up the Heat!

Your water distiller machine is ready! Now, all you’ve got to do is light up the fire or turn up the stove! Within a few minutes, as the salt water will reach its boiling point, the process of water distillation will begin!

A Few Tips

  • Use large bottles.
  • The bottle at the receiving end need not be made of glass.
  • Use cold water to wet the sand.
  • Frequently pour cold water at the receiving end as the condensation process begins.

The EndNote

And fella, this is how you survive being stranded on an island!

We hope that this technique will help you if you ever get alienated on an uninhabited island! Do share your experience with us. We’d love to hear from you.

Cheers!

Can Solar Powered Water Distiller Turn Salt Water into Fresh Drinking?

January 24, 2019 By Water Gadget

It’s long-debated how one can build a solar-powered water distiller that turns salt water into fresh. Currently, many of the world’s countries are facing a water crisis. And oceans holding 96.5% of the Earth’s water, can be a great source of drinking water in the forthcoming water crisis.

While it is true that 71% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, it is also true that 96.5% of which is conveyed in the oceans. And of course, this water is not that suitable for drinking being salt water.

So is there a solution to turn the salt water into fresh drinking water? Apparently, the process is known as Desalination and Israel has just built one of the world’s biggest Reverse Osmosis plant that turns salt water into fresh water.

Prominent Methods to Turn  Salt Water into Fresh

The process of Desalination is pretty simple as all you need to do it separate out water and salt from each other. In fact, you can build a home solar water distiller that makes fresh water from saltwater.

The most prominent methods for Desalination is either heating the water the same as in hydrological cycle, or Reverse Osmosis. The former one makes use of either a heating source or sun to bring water to boil and in the process, the water vapour gets generated which is nothing but fresh water.

The process of reverse osmosis is a little complicated. It comprises multiple stages from which the salt water passes and the salt is eliminated from the water. So unlike heating the water where water itself gets excluded, here, the salt is extracted from water.

Can Fresh Water be Generated from Ocean on a Large Scale?

Generating fresh water is pretty simple, right? All you need to do is heat the water, the salt is set apart, and boom, done! Right?

Absolutely not! Generating fresh water using solar water distiller or conventional water distiller at a small scale is easy. However, when you try doing the same on a large scale, it is economically not feasible. To produce a certain amount of water, the required amount of energy is enormous and practically stupid!

Hence, building a plant that mimics such process is foolish. However, one can always make use of reverse osmosis to do it on a large scale just like Israel did. Even this process comes with certain drawbacks but in a nutshell, can possibly be performed.

How does Solar Powered Water Distiller Work?

Solar Powered Water Distiller Salt Water to Fresh Water

Solar Powered Water Distiller, just like the name suggest, makes use of solar energy to turn salt water into fresh drinkable water.

First, a tank-like structure is set up with glass or plastic at the top that helps to increase the intensity of sun rays if set at certain degrees that focus on a particular position. Also, the darkened bottom helps in increasing the temperature. Once the water reaches its boiling temperature it starts to evaporate and getting through the condensation process turns into droplets while reaching the glass. And at the end, sliding towards the end gets stored in a storage place.

To turn this same concept into a large-scale one is almost impossible as heating a lot of water altogether and finding something that helps with the condensation process is greatly challenging.

The following illustration also suggests how one can build a rainwater catcher using the same arrangement. Rain Water is one of the most convenient ways people can conceive fresh water. However, due to lack of awareness, a large amount of this water gets wasted down the drainage. But with such arrangement, one can utilize such free resource of fresh water as well.

Coming back to the solar water distiller, this arrangement can be made more efficient by building it from solid iron sheets or similar metallic frame as metal easily conducts heat.

The EndNote

So in a nutshell, it is possible to turn salt water into fresh using a solar-powered water distiller. However, it is only feasible at a smaller scale and practically impossible on a large scale.

So can you save your life by building a solar-powered distiller if ever stranded on an island? Absolutely, yes! But can you generate enough for a population? Well, in the current scenario, no.

Megahome Water Distiller Reviews – Countertop and Stainless

January 22, 2019 By Water Gadget

With increasing industrialization, living in a metropolitan city has become a nightmare and the water quality has hit the bottom. Are you smiling right now because you have that Reverse Osmosis System installed at your house? Nevertheless, let me tell you one thing, you are not safe, at all! Believe it or not, RO does not even come anywhere close to the water distillation process in terms of purification. Know more about it as I review this amazing Megahome Water Distiller and decide for yourself.

Megahome has been in the industry of water distillers for over 22 years. With their years of expertise, they have created the most ideal product called Megahome Water Distiller which is the best water distiller available in the market for what it does, and that is purifying the water.

Problem with Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse Osmosis Systems consist of filters that purify the water passing through. The main problem with this is that the filters wear out over the time and your water quality degrades accordingly. Also, RO Systems waste a lot of water. Sometimes, the volume of wasted water beats the volume of purified water.

Based on the studies, there is no denying of the fact that these systems remove the essential minerals that one’s body can thrive on. Moreover, there are still chances of your water being contaminated with bacteria.

Hence, I rest my case.

Megahome Water Distiller Reviews

Megahome Water Distiller Review

Megahome Water Distiller has been in the industry for over 22 years. And during the course of time, Megahome has made a lot of improvements along the way in order to create this ideal water distiller that purifies water at its best!

Ensures Water Quality

Megahome Water Distiller makes use of years old water distillation process. Once you plug into the power outlet, the water is boiled at the temperature of 212 degrees. At such a high-temperature bacteria and parasites get killed in the process.

Now as the boiled water steam rises, it hits the roof where this water is cooled down using a cooling system. Now as the vapour turns into water, it is collected inside a glass collector.

Catches VOC

The process does not stop here. The boiled water still has the chances of being contaminated with VOC which is nothing but impurities that have a lower boiling point than water.

To catch these VOC, the Megahome Water Distiller makes use of a charcoal filter on the nozzle that pours distilled water into the collector.

And that is how you have the purest, the most serene water you may have ever drunk.

Say No to Plastic!

The walls of the machine, both interior and exterior are made with Full 304 stainless steel. Also, the nozzle and collector are made from glass. So there is no way your water is going to get in contact with any plastic material.

6 Reasons to Own a Water Distiller at Home

January 12, 2019 By Water Gadget

Nowadays, poor water quality is not limited to small towns or villages, it has grasped the metropolitan cities as well. And if you think that an RO System is the only and best solution, well, you may not be aware of Water Distillers! Water distilling is an ancient process and has been saving human lives for centuries.

Here, I have compiled a few reasons for you to install a water distiller at home.

Solid Reasons to Own a Water Distiller

Reasons to Own a Water Distiller Benefits

Here are 6 solid reasons why you should get a water distiller right away!

1. It does not Require a Filter

The most commonly performed water purification process is filtering. Filtering is the process in which water is run through a system of filters that in the process removes chemicals, contaminants, suspended gases, and solids from the water.

Although water filters do produce purified water, the problem with filters is that they lose their efficiency over the time. And reaching a certain point, they need to be changed which means it is not a one-time investment. You need to spend a few bucks every once in a while.

2. It does not Waste Water (Unlike RO Systems)

The Reverse Osmosis Systems are based on the principle of filtering itself. Here, the process opposite to the osmosis (hence, reverse osmosis) is performed. Water is passed under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane which purifies the water.

However, this process has certain drawbacks one of them being wastage of water. In order to produce a gallon of purified water, some of the RO Systems tend to waste another few gallons, which is not thoughtful at all looking at the modern-world water crisis.

With a Water Distiller, there is not a single problem related to wastage of water. It produces the same as it intakes.

3. It Kills All the Contaminants

If you are a regular family with kids, it is essential that your drinking water is free of all kinds of contaminants. Having a water distiller at home will ensure that your drinking water does not contain harmful bacteria and viruses.

While the water boils, some of the contaminants are killed due to the increased temperature and the ones remaining are left behind by the vapoured water.

4. Elimination of Chemicals

As the industrialization has hit the world with a boom, a lot of fresh water sources are affected with chemicals. Water distillers make sure that they remove such chemicals before they reach your mouth.

Also, as it is a common practice for towns to have water treated with fluoride, the excess amount of fluoride has taken a lot of infants as victims of fluorosis. Water distillation makes sure that your kids do not drink water with excess fluoride as they can get it easily from their everyday food.

Here one thing you need to consider is that boiling water does not kill VOC. However, you can easily get rid of them by having them filtered after distillation.

5. Saves You Some Serious Bucks!

Changing filters of Reverse Osmosis Systems is tiresome. It is not a one-time investment. You need to change the filters every once in a while, which, in a long run does some noticeable harm to your budget.

Talking about budget, RO Systems tend to waste a lot of water as well. On the other hand, water distillers do not waste water at all and still produces that same purified water. Also, do I need to remind you that water distillers are pretty cheap compared to RO Systems and apparently, they are a one-time expense!

6. It Cleanses Your Body from Within

Distilled water is mineral-free. A lot of people will argue that water needs to have minerals for better health, which is not true at all. One can get all the healthy minerals from their daily meals. On the other hand, drinking distilled water helps your body get purified!

Mineral-free water helps the body to flush-out the unnecessary toxins that reside within. So they literally purify your body(not certain about soul though)!

The EndNote

Water Distillation is an ancient process that has been running in the humanity for centuries. And it is still the best process to get yourself and your family the purest of the water.

Water Distillers come at a budget price and they are just a one-time investment that will compensate you and your family over the time with improved health!

Make sure you get one for the best of your loved ones right away.

How Water Distillers Work with Water Distillation Process

January 8, 2019 By Water Gadget

Water Distilling is not an invention of some fanatic scientist doing bizarre tests in his lab. Instead, Water Distillers are made on the principles of the natural process of water purification on earth, widely known as the hydrological cycle. Water Distillers mimic this same process and provide you with the purest form of water.

Here is a peek into how water distillers work.

How Water Distillers Work with Water Distillation Process

How Water Distillers Work

In order to understand the water distillation process, first, let us take a little detour to the hydrological cycle.

Hydrological Cycle

  • The hydrological cycle begins as the water in the oceans, rivers, ponds, and other water bodies heat up due to the scorching rays of the sun.
  • This heated water after reaching a certain temperature turns into water vapour. This process is known as Evaporation.
  • Water vapour, due to its weight being less than air(almost 1.5 times), it rises up in the air.
  • Reaching a certain height, this water vapour turns into water droplets and getting in contact with other gases and dust, forms clouds. (FUN FACT: A cloud can weigh as much as a Boing 747!!) This process is known as Condensation.
  • The clouds reaching a certain weight, outbursts and rains upon us filling up the water bodies with serene purified water which is known as Precipitation.

Now, let us take a look at how Water Distillers mimic this same process.

1. Boiling Water

First of all, most of the water distiller for home use come with an electric heater at the bottom. As you pour in some water in the tank of the water distiller, it starts heating the water up in order to make it boil. Some water distillers may also exceed 200 degrees temperature.

2. Water Reaches the Top

Being lighter than the air inside the water distiller, water vapour rises up. The top of the distiller comprises of a cooling system. The task of this cooling system is to cool down the water vapour and turn it into water droplets.

3. Impurities are Left Behind

Another thing to notice here is that the water distillation process does not remove impurities from the water, instead, it separates pure water from impurities. Hence, the purified water goes through the process of condensation and moves to a nozzle.

4. No Plastic Trend

Following the industry-wide no plastic trend, most of the modern water distillers come without a plastic material or do not let any plastic material get in the contact of the water.

Hence, you may find that the nozzle of your water distiller is made from glass that drips water into a glass collector.

5. Carbon Filter

There is one problem with the water distilling process which is VOC. VOC are Volatile organic compounds. These compounds have less boiling temperature than the water itself. Thus, they can easily get through the water distillation process without being eliminated.

In order, to deal with VOC, new-generation water distillers come with a carbon filter in the nozzle that drips water in the collector.

And that is how you get pure, free of contaminants and pollutants water!

The EndNote

Modern world Water Distillers are made with extreme precision in order to get you possibly the best water. There may be other processes like Reverse Osmosis Systems that claim to purify the water with the same expertise, however, these systems waste a lot of money, energy, and the precious water. Being an aware human being, it is totally foolish to choose a system that wastes 4 gallons of water to produce a mere 1 gallon of purified water.

Besides, what can be better than the technology that the mother earth performs herself to purify water!?
