How Water Distillers Work with Water Distillation Process

Water Distilling is not an invention of some fanatic scientist doing bizarre tests in his lab. Instead, Water Distillers are made on the principles of the natural process of water purification on earth, widely known as the hydrological cycle. Water Distillers mimic this same process and provide you with the purest form of water.

In order to understand the water distillation process, first, let us take a little detour to the hydrological cycle.

Hydrological Cycle

  • The hydrological cycle begins as the water in the oceans, rivers, ponds, and other water bodies heat up due to the scorching rays of the sun.
  • This heated water after reaching a certain temperature turns into water vapour. This process is known as Evaporation.
  • Water vapour, due to its weight being less than air(almost 1.5 times), it rises up in the air.
  • Reaching a certain height, this water vapour turns into water droplets and getting in contact with other gases and dust, forms clouds. (FUN FACT: A cloud can weigh as much as a Boing 747!!) This process is known as Condensation.
  • The clouds reaching a certain weight, outbursts and rains upon us filling up the water bodies with serene purified water which is known as Precipitation.

Now, let us take a look at how Water Distillers mimic this same process.

1. Boiling Water

First of all, most of the water distiller for home use come with an electric heater at the bottom. As you pour in some water in the tank of the water distiller, it starts heating the water up in order to make it boil. Some water distillers may also exceed 200 degrees temperature.

2. Water Reaches the Top

Being lighter than the air inside the water distiller, water vapour rises up. The top of the distiller comprises of a cooling system. The task of this cooling system is to cool down the water vapour and turn it into water droplets.

3. Impurities are Left Behind

Another thing to notice here is that the water distillation process does not remove impurities from the water, instead, it separates pure water from impurities. Hence, the purified water goes through the process of condensation and moves to a nozzle.

4. No Plastic Trend

Following the industry-wide no plastic trend, most of the modern water distillers come without a plastic material or do not let any plastic material get in the contact of the water.

Hence, you may find that the nozzle of your water distiller is made from glass that drips water into a glass collector.

5. Carbon Filter

There is one problem with the water distilling process which is VOC. VOC are Volatile organic compounds. These compounds have less boiling temperature than the water itself. Thus, they can easily get through the water distillation process without being eliminated.

In order, to deal with VOC, new-generation water distillers come with a carbon filter in the nozzle that drips water in the collector.

And that is how you get pure, free of contaminants and pollutants water!

Modern world Water Distillers are made with extreme precision in order to get you possibly the best water. There may be other processes like Reverse Osmosis Systems that claim to purify the water with the same expertise, however, these systems waste a lot of money, energy, and the precious water. Being an aware human being, it is totally foolish to choose a system that wastes 4 gallons of water to produce a mere 1 gallon of purified water.
